“Ogden Elementary Participates in “International Walk to School Day”
Ogden Elementary School will once again join Safe Kids Cape Fear and celebrate “International Walk to School Day” on Wednesday, October 3, 2012. The event raises awareness about pedestrian safety and promotes a healthy body and environment. This year, all Ogden neighborhoods will participate, including North Market Street neighborhoods. Students that live too far to walk will meet at Big Lots on Market Street at 7:00 a.m. to walk together to school. Closer neighborhoods will walk with families. In support of this event, there will also be safety patrol escorts led by our local Sheriff Department and city firefighters.
As a result of a very successful “Meet and Greet” with New Hanover County Planning and Parks Department, county officials have decided to walk with the students to school. The Meet and Greet also allowed Ogden families to hear about the upcoming phases proposed for future greenways. County officials unveiled that an approved sidewalk addition on Middle Sound Loop Road will be installed later this year.

Ogden families are excited the county is considering implementation of walk and bike connections for students to get to school safely. Karyn Crichton, Long Range Planner for New Hanover County, said, “Bicycle and pedestrian improvements within our neighborhoods and between our communities are a top priority for the New Hanover County Planning & Inspections Department because of their economic, social, and environmental benefits. New Hanover County is working on bicycle and pedestrian connections throughout the Middle Sound community connecting to the Cross City Trail system, Bayshore and Porters Neck as well as working with the City of Wilmington and the Wilmington Metropolitan Planning Organization to create a Comprehensive Greenway Plan. These connections reduce traffic congestion, increase physical activity, improve environmental health, and increase social interaction.”
More than 250,000 children across the United States and nearly three million around the world will participate in the annual event to learn about walking safely and to encourage the creation of safe walking environments.” For more information, visit
